The Reconnected Self
The Eighth Program in the Neurosomatic Psychology™ (NP) series (Formerly NEP)

You need your pain. It is a message, and we must listen to the messages that our body gives us. There are hundreds of millions of the depressed and anxious people, all over the world, they are giving us a message. They are telling us something has gone wrong with the way we live. We need to stop trying to muffle or silence or pathologize that pain. Instead, we need to listen to it, and honor it. It is only when we listen to our pain that we can follow it back to its source, and only there, when we can see its true causes, can we begin to overcome it.

4 % of all deaths in the EU in 2015 resulted from mental and behavioral disorders.
7 % of the EU population in 2014 reported having chronic depression.
In 2015, 14 % of all hospital beds in the EU were psychiatric care beds. EUROSTAT 2018

Growing mental illness amongst young people is one of the most serious public health challenges facing Nordic society. Mental health problems are common among the Swedish population, and surveys show that between 20 and 40 per cent of people have mental health problems at any one time. https://nordicwelfare.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/sverige_webb-1.pdf Many depressed people are told by their doctor, by Big Pharma, and by the bestselling books on depression and anxiety - The problem is in your head. It is a chemical imbalance. Your broken machinery needs to be fixed, antidepressants are the answer.

That does not mean all antidepressants are bad: some credible scientists argue they give some temporary relief to a minority of users, and that should not be dismissed.
The social and psychological causes have been ignored for a long time, even though it is apparent that the biological causes dont even start without them.
The World Health Organization, the leading medical body in the world, summarized the evidence well in 2011 when they explained -
"Mental health is produced socially: the presence or absence of mental health is above all a social indicator and therefore requires social, as well as individual, solutions."
The United Nations, in its official statement for World Health Day in 2017, explained that "the dominant biomedical narrative of depression" is based on "biased and selective use of research outcomes" that "cause more harm than good, undermine the right to health, and must be abandoned."
There is a "growing evidence base," they state, that there are deeper causes of depression, so while there is some role for medications, we need to stop using them "to address issues which are closely related to social problems.”
People suffering from depression and anxiety are not machines with broken parts. They are animals whose needs are not being met.
That is a crucial reason why our clients and so many of the people around us are depressed and anxious, they are disconnected.
